Rock wool, thermal and acoustic conditioning

Rock wool is a mineral insulation made up of basaltic rocks of organic origin and manufactured with coking coal. Thanks to its fusion in special ovens, its composition unravels in the form of fibers which give it insulating properties unmatched by other materials. With this material, a large number of products are manufactured in different formats and densities depending on whether it is intended for thermal or acoustic conditioning. Mineral wool is the only thermal insulator that naturally absorbs noise. Its elastic structure and porosity prevent the transmission of airborne, impact and reverberation noise. This material makes it possible to achieve a sound level reduction of up to 60/70 decibels, and dissipates the energy of the sound waves that penetrate them. Therefore, it provides authentic acoustic comfort. When trying to achieve adequate acoustic conditioning, “mass-spring-mass” systems with stone wool acting as a spring allow the same level of conditioning to be achieved as would be achieved with a structure ten times heavier. Rock wool is mainly used to acoustically insulate the separations between rooms in the same home, horizontally between homes or community uses between homes, office partitions, and leisure and commercial premises.

Main advantages of rock wool installation

  • Thermal efficiency. It allows to achieve great thermal comfort due to its insulating properties. Its fibrous structure contains dry air inside and constitutes a barrier to heat, in addition to having a low level of thermal conductivity due to the mineral filaments that compose it.
  • Protection against fire. Rock wool is incombustible. For this reason, it not only contributes to increasing the fire resistance of the building but also slows down its spread and saves time in the event of a fire.
  • Breathability. It is permeable to water vapor, which means that the house breathes and lets water vapor pass through its walls, reducing the chances formation of humidity by condensation.
  • Acoustic comfort. It is the thermal insulation material with the best level of acoustic conditioning.
  • Avoid humidity. Insulating facades and ceilings with rock wool prevents the formation of humidity by condensation, since the dew point is not reached.
  • Protects from the wind. By filling joints and gaps in the facades with rock wool, the cold air currents that cool the interior of the house do not enter.
  • Durability. The estimated useful life of a product made with stone wool is greater than 50 years. It retains all its features for a large part of the time because it is a product designed to resist.
  • Sustainable material. Rock wool can be recycled 100% without losing its properties. One of its main characteristics is that during its manufacture, the waste is put back into the oven.
