In this week’s post we wanted to talk about a technology used for acoustics, telemetry. The term telemetry, etymologically comes from the Greek, “tele” which means distance and metry which means “measure”.


Telemetry is used to remotely measure and control physical or chemical variables through data that is analyzed in a control center. This system sends the information to the control operator. It can be done through wireless communication. However, there are other sources by which it can be executed, such as: the telephone, computer networks, etc. The telemetry system works by means of a transducer as input device, a transmitter medium in the form of cable lines or radio waves, signal processing, data recording or observation apparatus. The transducer performs the task of transforming the physical or chemical magnitude into an electrical signal, so that it will be recorded and measured.


The objectives of the creation of this technology are, among many:
  • Measure physical or chemical magnitudes.
  • Remotely examine system activity.
  • Understand process conditions.
  • Observe system errors and improve them for proper use of telemetry.


Telemetry has a variety of functions, as it serves to:
  • Monitor fluid levels,
  • Measure fluid parameters such as temperature
  • Monitor the environment such as water, air
  • Locate dangerous gases.
This system can help us detect natural catastrophes, be it a tsunami or a hurricane. The recent investigations that are being developed with the acoustic telemetry system are the studies of behavior with marine species and evaluation of protection of these.
